Cabala – 3D Printed Building Sculpture

Night View
Introduction

Cabala is a 3D printed building sculpture of 12 meters tall. For ASW, this was the first endeavor of exterior installation. After the success of Vulcan Pavilion, we intended to implement 3D printing technology on building façade. Cabala, delivered within 4 months from the schematic to installation, was such a challenge. Situated in a critical place of a mixed-used complex, Cabala is expected to collect fortune in a way to attract attention for this real-estate development. Therefore, we selected banyan tree, a local plant in Guangdong Province which is a traditional symbol for luck and fortune, as the essential reference to make the 3D model. There are over 400 pieces of 3D printed components in this installation, which spent 2 months to print by 40 machines. There was also a specific mechanism design to attach this big mass onto the curtain wall. A multi-layered polished white coating was applied for damage-free from ultraviolet and self-cleaning purpose.
